Who: Middle School students attending schools within Maryland Senatorial District 37
What: Spelling Bee using words that are indigenous to the Health and Medical fields

Why: To instill in our children an interest and awareness of the health and medical fields through a competitive MedBee offering winners scholarships in trust for their college education, as well as guaranteed placement in health career exploration programs.
The MRHA hosted a first of its kind, Med Bee on May 18th, 2009 at Easton High School in Easton, Maryland. Thirty-four students from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in Caroline, Dorchester, and Talbot Counties participated in the first Med Bee. Ten thousand dollars was divided among six young women who placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th place. Two young women tied for the 5th place. The MRHA established a scholarship fund for Med Bee winners. Med Bee winner funds have been placed in trust until the young women are accepted by a college or university, at which time, their winnings and interest earned will be transferred to the college or university.

Senator Richard Colburn Medical Scholar Award Application
After 15 rounds the following students took the following awards:
- 1st place winner, winning $4,000, was Rani Ewing, a 6th grader at Easton Middle School-Talbot County
- 2nd place, winning $3,000 was Hajra Alvi, in 7th grade at Maces Lane Middle School-Dorchester County
- 3rd place, for $1,500 was Dominique Williams who is in the 6th grade at Maces Lane Middle School-Dorchester County
- 4th place was won by Leah Hoxie, an 8th grader at Chesapeake Christian School-Talbot County who won $1,000
- There was a tie for 5th place, with Abigail Guillemart, a 7th grader at Maces Lane Middle School-Dorchester County and Rebecca Herckner, an 8th grader at Chesapeake Christian School-Talbot County, splitting the $500 prize
Congratulations to the Med Bee winners and for all those young people that participated.
Senator Richard A. Colburn presented the Senator Richard A. Colburn Senior Scholarship award of $1,000 per semester to winner Jacob Mullen, a senior at Easton High School. Jacob will be entering a pre-med program at Saint Mary’s College in the fall of 2009.
Planning has begun for Med Bee 2 during 2010 on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In addition, MRHA members will begin planning for a Med Bee in Western Maryland during the spring of 2011.
